“I’m just not motivated. I just can’t seem to get up and exercise. I want to get results, but I’m just not motivated.” These are all statements I hear quite often as a trainer and wellness coach! I understand…finding motivation is like catching a run-away kite: the minute you get close, a gust of wind comes along and it’s gone again.
That’s the thing about motivation: Once you have it, it doesn’t stay! So, we need to learn how to create our own motivation so we can get results on our own! Don’t worry, I’ve got 3 tips for ya to help you do just that!
Tip #1: Get on Fire about your Why!
Your “Why” is something that needs to get you so passionate and worked up that you can’t help but take action. When I say your “why”, I am talking about the whole reason you want to reach your goal, why you want to start working out, why you want to be a better version of yourself. I’ll share mine with you to give you an idea: I want to be the mom who is out running with my kids to help practice for sports. I want to be the mom who can keep up and go the distance. I want to be the mom who can help out on the farm. I want to teach my kids how to have a healthy, confident body image.
Typing that out just made me get a fire; it made me want to get up and go workout. Your why needs to make you feel like that; if you haven’t found it yet, go deeper into why you want this! If you’re having trouble with your why, comment below or message me at email@example.com; I’d be happy to help!
Tip #2: Create Rewards
Sometimes, we need to trick ourselves into getting motivated. For instance, I LOVE purses and shoes, so for me, I will create a reward that revolves around one of those. I will print the picture off and put it by my computer, my mirror, etc…so I see it EVERYWHERE (by the way, do that with your why too! Maybe a quote saying, “I’m doing this for _____”). That motivates me to get moving even when I don’t want to!
There are 2 kinds of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic; now, I talk a lot about this in the Foxy Mom Club, but here’s the just of it: intrinsic motivation means your motivation comes from within; extrinsic means it’s coming from outside sources. Creating rewards is extrinsic and obviously, we can’t set rewards ALL the time…I mean, who’s checkbook can handle that??
But, here’s the truth: Set rewards (and rely on extrinsic motivation) until you feel in the flow with exercise and no longer need that extra push. Soon, you will find yourself relying on your own intrinsic motivation.
Tip #3: Stop saying “I’m Not Motivated” & Just Do It Anyway!
The more you say you’re not motivated, the more unmotivated you will be! Our actions are guided by our thoughts and our words, so start choosing your thoughts and words wisely! Instead of thinking you just aren’t motivated, start thinking “I am motivated to see results and I choose to take action right now!” Action creates motivation, not the other way around!
If you just sit around thinking “Man, I wish I was more motivated!”, do you think you will get motivated? NO! But if you get up and just do it anyway (I tell my clients, give me just 10 minutes and if you still don’t feel like it, stop), you will most likely be so in it and feel so much better that you will keep going!
